Project Objective:

We are doing this project to create a fun learning environment for the children at Kids Play Gym. We are creating a stage that can be used for the children to have plays. The stage will also be a great learning environment for the children.

Proposed Solution:

Our proposed solution is a 12’ by 8’ stage made up of 2x4 joists and girders and 4x4 columns with plywood covering for the floor and trim. All of the wood will be treated to be safe for the children and weather resistant. The stage will be secured using cement deck footers buried in the ground connected to the 12 lower columns. The 4 upper columns will be 8’ tall and used to support the shade cover and the curtains. The shade cover will be a weather resistant fabric that can be hooked and unhooked from the supports as needed. The curtains will be outdoor-rated and operate by being physically pushed and pulled into position. There will be movable steps to get onto the stage that will be half the size of the stage itself. The back of the stage will have multiple lidded storage trunks. Finally, the seating will be 4 long benches designed to seat 4 people each.

Building Process:

During lab on 10/26/22, our group built our first bench prototype. We identified a few areas for improvement in our design: the bench was too tall, unsteady, and needed additional supports.

Developing a DFMEA:

Our team began developing a DFMEA for our bench design.

Wood Sealant Test

We applied our chosen wood sealant to our bench prototype. This will allow us to test whether the sealant will adequately waterproof the bench (since it will be used in an outdoor setting). We knew it was waterproof if water beaded on the surface of the wood (as seen in the image below)

Building the Benches

Step 1: Create a wood cut list
Step 2: Order the correct amount of wood
Step 3: Cut the wood into the correct pieces for all of the benches

Step 4: Build, stain, and seal one bench at a time
