Water Table Fall 2022

For the Fall 2022 semester, the Water Table team is continuing our  water sanitization project from the previous academic semester. We are working to implement UV sanitization to kill potential harmful bacteria within the Water Table.

Proposed Solution:

UV light sanitization, which will eliminate harmful bacteria without the need of bleach. This will promote the safety of the children but also be cost effective in the future.

Experimental Procedure

image_processing20201006-8319-p4gedh.png
1. Gather water from local ponds/rivers
2. Test a small water sample to prove the existence of bacteria
3. Turn on UV light to sanitize water for however many desired hours
4. Collected a sample of the sanitized water, and compare bacteria existence in the waters

UV Light Holder Design Process

After proving that the UV light was effective, the final step of the process is to create a holder that will hold the UV light into place in the storage tank that we are sanitizing the water in.

To the right are holder ideas that were created by the group and presented to the partners. In the process of designing the holder, many revisions have been made to ensure the best possible design for the water table.

Final Prototype

This is the final design of the light holder that we came up with. The holder surround the top of the UV light as well as its wire with ribbed tubing. The actual light is held in place inside the tube by caulking.

We created this idea to properly protect the wire from touching the water. The tubing acts as a guard that surround the wire, but is also a way for us to attach the light holder using zip ties to the wall of the tank.

Holder Implementation

Here is a diagram and a replication of how the light holder will be attached to the storage tank. The picture on the right is a replication that we created using a bucket. The outside of the bucket is essentially inside the tank, and the bucket wall is the storage tank wall.

Replication:
Two small holes will be drilled on the wall of the storage tank, which will be used for the zip ties. The ribbed tubing used will help prevent the holder from sliding off of the zip ties because its textured nature will allow the zip ties to latch onto it rather than if it was a smooth pipe.

Drawing Diagram:
The image to the right is just a drawing of how it would look inside the storage tank. The height that the holder is placed in can change, however we wanted as much of the UV light to submerged directly in the water as that is the way the sanitization is most effective.
